Writing in this week's The Lawyer, Michael Stevens writes that law models for commercial litigation go in and out of fashion.
Mr Stevens compares the current "vogue" for outsourcing to the Mexican wave initiative two decades earlier, which saw firms adopting Taylorist practices and outsourcing administrative parts of the legal process to regional firms.
Alternative business structures are also expected to radically change the industry within this decade.
However, the legal expert believes that firms will again turn to the regional firms rather than offshore ones in a bid to ensure quality.
The move could improve commercial litigation practices from all perspectives, Mr Stevens claims.
He writes: "Despite cost savings, quality assurance when delivering legal services is paramount, and this is best guaranteed by working with ¬outsourcing partners who understand the context of the client's sector and who share a common approach and culture."
